DVM, MS, DACVP (Clinical Pathology)

Dr. Kate Baker grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and completed her DVM at the University of Tennessee in 2012. She then completed a rotating internship and Clinical Pathology residency and became board certified in 2016. Dr. Baker currently works as a diagnostic clinical pathologist and educator. She offers continuing education resources through her website, Veterinary Cytology Schoolhouse and personalized telecytology consultations through her online service, Pocket Pathologist. She lives on a small farm in Columbia, TN with her husband and two young children. They have three dogs (two chihuahuas and a cavapoo), a mini-donkey, a pygmy goat, and 30 chickens.

Part One
This session will cover pertinent topics in cytology as they apply to the veterinary technician.

Discussion topics include
• Items in your cytology toolkit
• Collection and preparation techniques for FNA and fluid cytology
• Common mistakes in sample preparation
• Common cytologic artifacts Learning

Objectives:
1. Identify the items needed for sample collection and preparation.
2. Understand what to do and what not to do regarding sample collection and preparation.
3. Recognize common cytologic artifacts and gain confidence in what can be ignored on your slide.

Part Two
This session will cover pertinent topics in cytology as they apply to the veterinary technician.

Discussion topics include
• Review of the cytologic algorithm
• Review of inflammatory patterns and what causes them
• Neoplasm categories and their cytologic patterns • Criteria of malignancy

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize inflammatory patterns and be able to give differentials when seen.
2. Differentiate between the different neoplasm types based on their cytologic appearance.
3. Identify criteria of malignancy and what that means for the patient.
