Maurice D. Cottman

Maurice D. Cottman is the inaugural Director for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the college of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University. An alum of Saint Joseph’s University (‘12 & ‘17) a former Educational Consultant for Iannucci Consulting and Director at Drexel University. At Drexel, Cottman led the Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion and helped to establish the university’s first official food pantry. He helped to create dozens of community engagements while building programs, in addition to serving as Drexel’s campus engagement contact for identity-based student organizations and as a co-chair for the institution’s Anti-Racism Task Force. Using a holistic approach to the student experience with intersectional advocacy Maurice meets each individual student, peer, and supervisor where they are. He currently works with local and national Veterinarian organizations in an effort to better the field of Veterinarian Medicine.

Implicit Bias: We All Have Them, Now What?
This two-hour workshop will examine the root causes of implicit biases while offering solutions for working equitably through these predispositions. This 2-hour session will satisfy upcoming health equity training requirements for veterinary technicians.

Shona Meyer completed the Veterinary Technician Specialty in Anesthesia and Analgesia in December of 2010, her Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology from the College of Southern Idaho in 2005, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from Lewis and Clark State College in 2000. Shona started working in veterinary medicine as an assistant in a private practice in 1998 and has 25 years of experience in veterinary medicine, 18 years working in the Anesthesia section at The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Washington State University. She is currently the Anesthesia Technician Supervisor at WSU.

Ashley Byrne

Ashley Byrne

Ashley Byrne is a Licensed Veterinary Technician in Washington State. She started at PIMA Medical Institute and obtained her Veterinary Assistant Certificate in 2005. She began working at VCA Animal Medical Center of Marysville and returned to PIMA Medical Institute in 2007 to be a part of the Seattle Campus’s first Veterinary Technician class. She was part of the first VCA Technician Development Team and is currently the Regional Technician Director for VCA’s Northwest & Hawaii Group. Ashley has worked in several private practices, and enjoys meeting technicians and seeing new practices. She joined the WSAVT in 2019 as the Communications Chair, spent a year in the President-Elect role, and will step into the President position in July of 2021. Moving into her term, she hopes to expand the executive board, bolster board volunteers, and increase member benefits. When she is not working on empowering veterinary teams, she can be found gardening or enjoying time with her family on Camano Island, Washington.
